Power in Numbers

Power in Numbers was the title and theme of a screen-printing exhibition that Fred Higginson (Print Club London) and I (for Cure Studio) curated, printed and exhibited at Bodhi Gallery on Brick Lane.

We had over 400 entries from over over 42 countries – including the US, Germany, Norway, New Zealand, Italy, China, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan and the Philippines.

We screenprinted 50 artists work each in an edition of 50 with alot of help from our friends including the wonderful Ornamental Conifer, Handwash Studio, Patrick Saville and many many more!

The private view was on Thursday 7th of May and attracted many more people than we anticipated; helped by Design Week featuring the show on the backpage of their print edition and Creative Review raising the profile on their blog. The music was provided by the incredibly talented (musically and visually) Rob Francis (who is also one half of Get Mullerd and Dance) and alongside the 50 screenprints we had an additional sculpture from Baldrick Buckle who had cast The Brick phone, in brick.

Throughout the 3 weeks of the exhibition we held talks, print demonstrations, industry events and an incredible live music night with Ambiguous Records.

The exhibition has been a complete success with press coverage nationally and internationally and some of the show going onto Boston (USA) and at the time of writing potentially Tokyo.

The images shown right are:
› The original stamp used on money, posters, toilet doors, letters, magazines, fanzines, comment boxes (you get the idea?) to encourage people to send us work for the exhibition
› After a long day sorting out the entries we sit back and look at the final 50 submissions in my front room

› We mixed each colour using Neptune Inks; very expensive but stunning depth of colour

› Sorting through a selecting the prints for the edition (we printed a few extra of each artists work to make sure the edition was as good as possible)
› Handwash Studios geometric work ‘Static’ exposed on the screen and ready to print. Yann (Handwash Studio) actually printed this himself and worked all night making sure each print was perfect. We hadn’t realised that he had numbered the edition on the reverse; and the next day we numbered the edition on the front – making these extra collectable!
› Each print is embossed with a stamp for the show and numbered in an edition of 50
› We set up the show in a record 5 hours; with alot of help from lots of people – thank you
› The private view with alot of people streaming in

› The queue of people to get into the exhibition was incredible
› The word Edition and some wayfinding arrows to help people navigate the two floors
